United Way Blackhawk Region (UWBR)'s Day of Caring is an annual day of action that connects teams of corporate volunteers with community service projects from across the Blackhawk Region (Rock County, WI and northern Winnebago County, IL). Volunteer teams roll up their sleeves and provide much-needed manpower to complete half- or full-day projects at local organizations.

Projects are open to ALL nonprofits, including local agencies, service clubs, public schools, municipal partners, and community organizations in the Blackhawk Region.

UWBR will do our best to accommodate hundreds of volunteers, but reserve the opportunity to right-size the event based on project needs.
We welcome all who wish to volunteer with a team - individuals, corporations, and nonprofits alike, including corporate partners facilitating United Way campaigns.
Please be reminded, Team Leads are responsible for helping to disseminate Day of Caring info to their Team members. The registration deadline is firm to ensure Day of Caring t-shirts arrive in time.
Day of Caring Registration
The 2026 Day of Caring will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 9. All projects begin at 9 a.m. and run until they are completed.
Prior to the Day of Caring projects, we’re hosting a breakfast and kickoff event:
- Location: ABC Supply Stadium, 217 Shirland Ave, Beloit, WI 53511
- Registration and Breakfast: 7:30am
- Program: 8am
Volunteer participation in Day of Caring is a benefit afforded to corporate partners that facilitate United Way campaigns.
What is Day of Caring?
Day of Caring is United Way of the Blackhawk Region's signature annual day of action, uniting corporate volunteer teams with nonprofits across Rock County and northern Winnebago County. Together, we show that United is the Way by rolling up our sleeves and providing hands-on support to complete meaningful projects at local agencies.

What time do Day of Caring projects start?
Projects kick off at 9 a.m. and run until completed.
Our agency isn't a United Way Funded Partner — may we still participate?
Absolutely! Day of Caring is open to all nonprofits, community organizations, and service clubs across our region.
What kinds of projects do nonprofits submit?
Projects reflect the needs, creativity, and resources of your organization. Past examples include yardwork, painting, landscaping, deep cleaning, flyer distribution, supply and pantry organization, donation room sorting, fence building, furniture and playground equipment assembly, Little Free Library construction, flower deliveries to home-bound neighbors, shelter welcome kits, and clerical projects like bulk mail collation.
We're not sure if our project is a good fit.
Just ask! Email doc@unitedwaybr.org and we'll help find the right fit. Safety is our top priority, United Way of the Blackhawk Region reviews all project requests and reserves the right to decline any submission.
How should our agency prepare?
We recommend appointing a Project Lead to plan, gather supplies, and develop instructions. Lean teams might ask a board member or volunteer to take this on. Agencies with satellite locations should designate a Project Lead at each site. Safety should stay top of mind throughout planning.
Is there a cost to participate?
Yes, costs vary by project. Hosting nonprofits are responsible for supplies, materials, tools, and equipment. Many agencies keep costs down by borrowing or renting equipment or seeking donations — the volunteer sweat equity itself delivers huge savings. Nonprofits are also expected to provide lunch for their volunteer team.
Should we provide lunch for volunteers?
Yes, providing lunch is required. Some volunteers may choose to handle lunch independently, but agencies are expected to offer it.
Can we submit more than one project?
Yes, submit a separate registration form for each project.
Can we ask volunteers to bring their own items?
Yes, though your agency remains responsible for required supplies and equipment. Helpful suggestions for volunteers include work or gardening gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, and kneeling pads.
What do agencies often forget to do?
Agencies get focused on the project itself and forget to educate and inspire volunteers about their mission. Welcome volunteers with a brief tour, share why your agency exists and the impact you make in our community, there may be future volunteers, donors, or allies in the room. And don't forget to say thank you!
Wisconsin weather is unpredictable...
Be prepared to keep volunteers hydrated throughout the day, and consider having fans, umbrellas, or shade on hand.
Is there a rain date?
No, given the logistics involved, we're unable to schedule a make-up day. Volunteer teams and project sites are encouraged to coordinate directly on indoor alternatives if needed.
Will we receive additional communication?
Yes. After registering, you'll get a confirmation email, followed by notice of your assigned volunteer team once registration closes, along with additional event details. Questions any time: doc@unitedwaybr.org.
